Job Description

Description Primary function is to provide personal healthcare and related services to the patient in their place of residence; to assist in providing a safe and clean environment; work cooperatively with the patient, and family; and share observations and problems with the supervisor. Works under the direction and supervision of a registered nurse. Essential Functions: Provides direct patient care to patient under direction of the RN and according to the Aide Plan of Care. Provides necessary skills to assist the patient with safe transfers and ambulation per the Hospice policy. Provides necessary skill to appropriately report changes and document pertinent information and care rendered to patient to ensure continuity of care. Practices accepted infection control principles. Provide a clean, safe, and comfortable environment. Promotes positive, supportive, respectful communication to patient/family and other employees. Provides an environment which promotes respect for patient, privacy, and property. Provides skills necessary to assist the patient with proper nutrition and adequate fluid intake. Contributes to the management and efficient operation of the Hospice and demonstrate effective time management skills. Provides skills necessary to perform treatments and procedures according to the Hospice Qualifications Education: High School Diploma Preferred. Has successfully completed one of the following: A) Training program/competency evaluation as specified in §418.76(b)(c) of the Medicare regulations; B) Competency evaluation program that meets §418.76( c); C) Nurse aide training/competency evaluation program approved by the state and listed in good standing on the state nurse aide registry; D) State Licensure program that meets requirements of §418.76(b)©. Licensure: Must have a current driver’s license. Experience: At least one year experience preferred as a Hospice Aide or Nursing Assistant in a hospital, nursing home, home health agency, hospice or long-term care facility or completion of Certified Nursing Assistant or Certified Home Health Aide Program. Skills: Must be able to read, write, and verbally report clinical information to patients, representatives, and care givers, as well as to other hospice staff. Demonstrates interest in the welfare of the ill and elderly. Successful completion of the Aide Competency Evaluation Skills Checklist that meets §418.76© and written Skills Test. Transportation: Reliable transportation and valid auto liability insurance.

What to Expect in This Role Day-to-Day

Based on typical senior living facilities in the DFW area.

For housekeeping roles, the day follows a room-by-room schedule — cleaning resident rooms, sanitizing common areas, managing laundry, and responding to spill or accident cleanups as they happen. Infection control protocols are more rigorous than in hotels or commercial cleaning, especially during flu season or respiratory illness outbreaks.

Maintenance staff handle a daily work order queue — everything from changing light bulbs and fixing call buttons to HVAC maintenance and plumbing repairs. Life-safety equipment checks (fire extinguishers, exit lighting, generator testing) happen on set schedules. Activities professionals plan and lead group programming — exercise classes, crafts, music sessions, outings — and also provide one-on-one engagement for residents who cannot participate in group settings. Social workers manage care conferences, discharge planning, family mediation, and community resource referrals. Across all these roles, the common thread is that you become a familiar, trusted presence in residents' daily lives.
